Summary/Abstract:
Tobacco use is the leading preventive cause of death globally, causing more than 8.7 million deaths each year. Tobacco smoke contains over 7,000 toxic chemicals and can reduce life expectancy by at least 10 years. In the European Union, tobacco causes an estimated 700,000 deaths each year, with a worrying prevalence of 26% in the general population and 29% among 15-24 year olds. The emergence of new tobacco products, increased use of vaping devices and heated tobacco are alarming trends, especially as smoking usually starts before the age of 25, when the risk of addiction is at its highest. In this context, Romania adopted Law No. 64/2024, applicable from April 3, 2024, which bans smoking and the use of all categories of tobacco or nicotine products, including e-cigarettes and nicotine pods. Educational establishments must develop internal regulations with specific sanctions to effectively implement this law.
